The responses of society

Federal Government
The federal government provides millions of dollars to the Australian Government Envirofund. Relief is also provided through the Natural Heritage Trust program, the largest environmental rescue package provided. The money the government provides, goes towards drought assistance across Australia, and towards the funding of community projects. The drought assistance helps drought effected farmers and rural communities, through employment services, counselling, income support and interest rate relief. In extreme cases, farmers can apply for the Exceptional circumstances program, that provides farmers and others affect by drought with income support. The Australian government also provides the Bureau of meteorology, which has a drought water service, that aims to provide early warning and monitoring of droughts.

State Government
Many state governments impose mandatory water restrictions, these restrictions include the banning of sprinklers, hosing of hard surfaces and hand hosing lawns and gardens.

Local Government
Local governments provide public works and services such as health and welfare to rural communities, in times of drought, farmers often rely on local governments for support.

Community Groups
Community groups have the local knowledge and expertise to effectively manage drought and run management. An example of a community group is Landcare. Landcare is a voluntary, community driven conservation network, it is active with various drought programs. Communities play an active role in deciding how to approach local challenges.

Individuals
Individuals play a significant role in response to drought. Many individuals in Australia that are in drought stricken areas, are optimistic and very active in taking advice from authorities. However, many individuals leave rural areas for urban centres, resulting in a rural decline.
